Racing seats –

A factory visit at Scheel-Mann HQ

We‘re proud of our partnership with Scheel-Mann seats. Follow us around and visit the German manufacturers secret archive.

Sickalps was born out of a desire to drive historic sports cars - intensely, consciously, and where they belong: on challenging Alpine roads. We have been using our 1965 SWB for our tours since 2019. It is not a showpiece, but a daily companion on long stages, steep passes, and changing conditions. During this time, we have driven more than 30,000 kilometres in the mountains – kilometres that create experience and set standards.

Sometimes the best stories don't come from sitting at a desk, but from being out and about—on the road, on the move, where vehicles are used exactly for what they were intended. This is precisely how Scheel-Mann and we made contact with each other when they were looking for an SWB where they could test the prototypes of the seat rails for the legendary “Scheel 101.” What followed was an invitation to the company headquarters and production site in Pleidelsheim and the beginning of a comfortable partnership. On site, we gained a deep insight into the ongoing production process and the non-public archive, where numerous historic racing seats, early prototypes, and development stages are stored. Looking at these objects, it quickly became clear that Scheel-Mann does not build seats for the spirit of the times, but for people who drive.

It is precisely because of the intensive use of our SWB that we know how crucial details are often underestimated. One of the most important points of contact between driver and vehicle is the seat. That's why we drive our tours in the legendary and newly redesigned Scheel 101. Over the years, the seat has proven to be reliable, ergonomic, and precise in terms of driving – even after many hours in the car. It provides optimal seating comfort with maximum control without changing the historic character of our vehicle. For us, a Scheel-Mann seat is not a compromise on originality, but a conscious decision in favour of drivability and safety. Historic vehicles are demanding, which makes a stable and ergonomic connection between driver and vehicle even more important. The Scheel 101 improves precisely this point of contact without changing the character of the car. It does not make driving more comfortable in the classic sense, but rather more controlled, safer, and more sustainable. That's why we believe that if something has proven itself over thousands of kilometres, we keep it. If it doesn't work, it goes. That's why we recommend the Scheel 101 with conviction—because we drive it. And because we know what it can do.

Our recommendation is based
not on theory and catalogs,
but on actual use.

Germany occupies a special position here: as the cradle of automotive and racing culture, with brands such as Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi setting standards since the beginning of the 20th century. Scheel-Mann has established itself in this environment as a partner to the motorsport and tuning scene – with seating systems that meet the highest demands in both professional racing and ambitious hobby use. For decades, Scheel-Mann has stood for German engineering and a deep understanding of motorsport. Developed and manufactured in Germany, the seats were created with the aim of combining function, ergonomics, and durability – without distorting the character of the vehicle. The 101 model in particular blends harmoniously into classic vehicles, both visually and technically. It does not appear modern or artificial, but rather natural. This is precisely what makes it particularly suitable for historic sports cars.

In historic motorsport—and especially when driving sportily on winding mountain roads—the seat determines how precisely a vehicle can be maneuvered. Standard seats in older vehicles were designed for everyday comfort, not for long journeys at the limits of performance. The Scheel-Mann Model 101 closes this gap. It offers stable lateral support, supports the back, and enables a relaxed, controlled seating position – even over many hours. The result is a driving experience that is focused, confident, and significantly less physically tiring.

Anyone who drives a historic sports car regularly and with high standards should pay as much attention to the seat as to the chassis, brakes, or tires. In our experience, the Scheel-Mann Model 101 is one of the most sensible investments for intensive driving. After more than 30,000 kilometres in our car, we know that this seat not only makes driving possible—it also maintains the enjoyment for both driver and passenger.
